From Up Yonder
From Up Yonder is an exploration of a memory of a childhood in the mountains. In this piece, the sounds of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Tennessee are reinvented using field recordings taken from various locations throughout Brooklyn, NY and recreated to illuminate that memory. Rich in biodiversity and cultural and historical significance the Blue Ridge Mountains provide a rich biophany of sound. From warbling song birds and creeks to the tickling of the banjo and fiddle in bluegrass, “Appalachian” sound has become almost ubiquitous in its reflection of what is “natural.” In exploring the ability for “Appalachian” sound to transport, this piece uses sounds from the reverberant tunnels in Prospect Park as well as throughout nearby Brooklyn neighborhoods along with tracks from the New School sound library.
